Henry Clay Nutt was the third born child of his parents, Henry Nutt and Asenath Wheeler Nutt. He married Evalina Stringham sometime before the 1860 census.

During the Civil War Henry C. Nutt was appointed to the staff of the famous Iowa war governor, Samuel J.(ordan) Kirkwood (1813-1894). It was in this position Henry obtained his title of Colonel. Samuel J. Kirkwood served as the Governor of the State of Iowa during the Civil War years from 1860 to 1864, and again from 1876 to 1877. He was a strong leader and a firm believer in individual rights.

A new church was built in Montpelier, Vermont (it was completed and dedicated on 24 Nov 1874) and Col. Henry C. Nutt donated the massive bell at a cost of about $1,500. This donation was made as a memorial gift in the name of his two deceased sisters. The inscription on the bell read: In Memory of My Sisters, Fanny and Asenath, by H. C. Nutt, Trinity M. E. Church, Montpelier, Vt. 1872. [SOURCE: VT Historical Gazetteer, Vol. 4, Pub. 1882, pg. 380]
