Rites Wednesday
Widow of One of Last Survivors of Wann Disaster
Mrs Letitia Ruth Dillon, widow of Thomas A Dillon, one of the last known survivors of the Wann disaster, died this morning at 10 o'clock at the Mather Nursing home in her eighty-first year.
Mrs Dillon, who suffered a paralytic stroke and entered the hospital last Jan. 1. Before her husband became ill, had never been informed of her husband's death because of the nervous condition in which she had been since the beginning of her illness.
At the time Mrs Dillon became ill, she and her husband were staying at the Gum Hotel in Alton. She was moved by ambulance to Alton Memorial Hospital and her husband, who had suffered from the shock when his wife was stricken with paralysis, also entered the hospital. He died Feb 1.
Mrs Dillon was born Oct 12, 1869 at Moro, a daughter of the late James H and Eliza Smith. She lived on the farm there with her parents until her marriage to Thomas A Dillon in 1895. After their marriage, the couple moved to a farm, near Fosterburg where they engaged in farming.
Dillon retired in 1925 and later the couple spent a great deal of time in traveling, visiting in Florida and California. Last summer they returned to this vicinity and took up their residence at the Gum Hotel where they remained until they entered the hospital.
After leaving the hospital, Mrs Dillon was cared for in the home of a niece, Mrs Alfred Moore at Wood River, but recently had been at the Mather Nursing home.
She is survived by one brother, Arthur H Smith of East Alton, and three sisters, Mrs James W Mitchell of Ottawa, Kans., Mrs Lulu Cowdery of Denver and Mrs Laura Henderson of San Leandro, Calif.
