GREENVILLE, VA…

George Thomas Basham, beloved husband of Edna Abbie Basham went to his Heavenly home on November 20, 2013. He peacefully passed away into the arms of his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, while surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 21, 1916 in Shawsville, VA, a son of the late John and Alma (Hodges) Basham.

On December 23, 1938, he married the love of his life, Abbie. They shared a blessed union and have been looking forward to celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary next month. He leaves behind a legacy of their unconditional love story, as well as the dear love for his family, and his wonderful sense of humor.

At the time of his home going, he was the oldest member of Greenville Baptist Church.

Always industrious and hard-working, Mr. Basham retired from Western State Hospital in November, 1978.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant children, David Thomas Basham, Lois Anita Basham, and George Daniel Basham; his brothers, Noah, Rangley, Tom, Clifford, and Evans; his sisters, Eula, Blondine, Lustra, and Lunsey; and great-grandson Cody Miller.

In addition to his wife, Abbie, he is survived by his children Roger Basham and wife Jane, Shirley Smith and husband Dennis, Bonnie Gilliam, and Dana Leavitt; his grandchildren Faye Cooper and husband Gary, Kevin Basham and wife Latisa, Audra McCray and husband Tim, Jimmy Hemp and wife India, Amy Melle and husband Tom, David Hemp and wife, Carolyn, Jennifer Leavitt, Wendy Clem and husband Tyler, Holly Edwards and husband Cliff, Christopher Gilliam, and 18 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and sister, Ursula Brumfield.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Revs. Eric Brown and Jamie McClanahan. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

As per his request his grandsons and great grandsons as well as special friend, Bobby Proffitt will be active pallbearers.
