Walter Allan Pelvin died on Feb 28, 1943, three days after being injured during a riot by Japanese Prisoners of War. This made him the only New Zealand Soldier killed at home "on active service"
He was buried in Geraldine with full military honours.

"Wattie", as he was known, was an excellent swimmer and pianist.
