He was born on Aug. 24, 1937 to the late Baron and Ruth (Richardson) VanDyke in Bluefield, WV. He graduated from Dunbar High School and attended American University in Baltimore, MD. In 1968, Woody moved to Amarillo and worked for Channel 7 as the Sports Anchor. He was active in children's sports and started KIDS, Inc. He moved to Lubbock in 1986 and was General Manager for KJAK where he was still very involved in High School and College sports. Woody married Margie Coleman on Aug. 29, 1987 in Midland. He was very involved in Christian Radio Broadcasting and was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award for Youth and West Texas Baseball, 2009. Woody attended Trinity Church and served on the LISD Board of Directors.
Those left to cherish Woody's memories are his wife, Margie; four children, Larry VanDyke of Spring, Kim Probst and husband Paul of Woodstock, GA, Laura Kennedy and husband Keith of Acworth, GA and Kyle VanDyke of Marietta, GA; their mother, Betty Petersen of Woodstock, GA; four step-children, Rhonda Jenkins of Austin, Vicky Coleman of Plano, Randell Coleman and wife Janet of the Philippines and Terris Coleman of San Bernardino, CA; twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
