John Dillard Harris, prominent Madison civic, church and business leader, died January 4, 1998 at Athens Regional Hospital of complications after surgery for a broken hip. Mr. Harris, 85, was a lifetime resident of Morgan County and former owner and operator of Harris Furniture Company.

He was also a two term mayor of Madison, three term city councilman, former president of the Chamber of Commerce, former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Morgan County Foundation, Inc., sponsoring organization of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Madison where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was also a past president of the Madison Kiwanis Club.

He was born in Morgan County on August 15, 1912, the son of the late Dillard and Fannie Whitaker Harris. He was associated with his father in business before opening his furniture store. Mr. Harris was married to the former Sarah Frances Baldwin who survives him. His only brother, Lt. Albert Harris, was killed while with the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Madison on Wednesday, January 7 at two o'clock. The Reverend Dr. Jim Ross officiated. Burial was in Madison Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to Madison Baptist Church or to the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center. Simmons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
