He was the son of Fred Lewis and Della Grace (Thompson) Hyde. He had three sisters: Vera, Mamie, and Grace.
He married 1st on July 22, 1923 Florence Marie Laubach. They had two children: Mary and Scott Jr. She died in 1945.
He married 2nd on November 21, 1946 Agnes E Holstad. She died in 1990 in Minnesota.

He graduated in 1922 from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and established a practice in Montevideo. He was forced to resign after nine years because of severe arthritis. He moved to Oregon in 1931. He became the co-owner of the former Medical Arts Opticians from 1940 to 1955.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, an honorary life member of the Oregon Orchid Society, a member of American Legion Post 66, and Senior Craftsmen of Oregon.
