Son of Edward C. Hale and Susan Tolman

On June 15, 1858, Abner and Catherine Lockwood were married. Their daughter, Ida, was born in 1861.

Abner served as a fifer (musician) in Company G of the 7th Regiment, Vermont volunteers. during the Civil War. He mustered in February 12, 1862, and mustered out May 1, 1865.

Ater his service, Abner returned to Vermont where he was a miller in North Springfield.
