J.J. Baker, a pioneer resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home in the northeast part of Hawarden at 9:30 Saturday evening from infirmities incident to his advanced years. He has been in gradually failing health for a number of years.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church in Hawarden with Rev. Robt. H. Forrester, the pastor, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Julius John Baker was born at Ypsilanti, Mich., on March 15, 1852, and passed away June 10, 1933, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 26 days. When a young man he moved with his parents to Grant county, Wis., where he lived until 1884 when he moved with his family to this vicinity and continued to reside here for forty-eight years.
On May 16, 1875, Mr. Baker was united in marriage with Ann Eliza Quick. Thirteen children were born to this union, his wife and two children preceding him in death. Mrs. Baker passed away Oct. 20, 1930; a son, Sheridan, died at the age of 14 months and a daughter, Sarah, at 16 years. He is survived by eleven children, 24 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. The children are: Mrs. C.S. McCarty, Muscatine, Iowa; Mrs. John Anderson, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. L.A. Luchsinger, Mrs. J.E. Sporrer and Mrs. Wm. Herrmann, all of Huron, S.D.; L.A. Baker, Carthage, S.D.; Mrs. Emil Anderson, Mrs. W.W. Sporrer and Harry L. Baker, all of Hawarden; and Mrs. Elvie Henderson of Alcester.
After coming to this community Mr. Baker was engaged in farming until 1903 when he moved to his home in the northeast part of Hawarden where he has resided continuously for the past thirty years. He was engaged in the dray and transfer business for a number of years after moving to Hawarden but retired from active work a number of years ago.
Mr. Baker was a hard worker during his active years, honorable and reliable, and was held in high esteem by his neighbors and friends, who extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family.
