Dale was the son of James M. McCauley and Ella A. McCauley of Uhrichville OH and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 27 1966 in Cleveland OH. In Vietnam he was serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During the month of April the Battalion continued patrolling in their area of operations in the vicinity of the An Hoa Combat Base in Quang Nam Province. On April 14, a patrol in the vicinity of the Phu Lac (2) hamlet in Duy Xuyen District was hit with a volley of automatic weapons and rifle fire. PFC Mc Cauley was hit by several gun shots and mortally wounded
