The U. S. Army Register of Enlistments shows Bernard Monaghan enlisting on 7 July 1870 in New York, NY. Born in Fermanagh, Ireland, he is 25 years old;a tailor by trade; about 5'- 8" tall with black hair, hazel eyes and a dark complextion. This record shows his assignment to Co. C, 20th US Infantry and at Fort Ransom on 29 January 1871 he died of "inflamation of the stomach".

Upon the closure of Fort Ransom, all burials were removed to Fort Abercombie and reinterred on 28 June 1876. Tracing the Quartermaster records from Fort Abercombie on to Fort Abraham Lincoln and then to Custer National, the records show the surname mis-spelled as 'Monahan'.

Further research finds him in the 1870 US Census records as a private in the US Army on 7 July 1870 in New York City.
