Social Reformer. Former slave who purchased his own freedom and built the most successful wagon building business in Independence, Missouri. His wagons and oxen yolks were considered the best (among considerable competition) and pioneers heading west helped turn his operation into the largest business in town before the Civil War. He "bought "slaves and allowed them to work for him to pay him back, thus earning their freedom. Today a park and a road in Independence are named for him.
