Troy, IL--Funeral services for Fred Gerfen a former Troy resident, who died at his home in St. Louis, Mo., last Sunday, March 16, were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Troy Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in Friedens cemetery here.
He was 74 years old. For the past several years he has been in failing health.
He was born in Germany on Feb. 22, 1878, and came to this country with his parents when he was two years old. They lived in Schenectady, N.Y. for several years before coming to Troy. On Nov. 25, 1903 he was married to Miss Minnie Schoon at the St. Paul's Lutheran church. The Rev. Deib, then pastor of the church, performed the wedding ceremony.
He owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Troy before retiring. He was a prominent citizen of Troy for nearly 76 years. Mr. and Mrs. Gerfen moved to St. Louis in November, 1950.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Gerfen, one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Roth of Chicago, two sons, Fred and John of St. Louis; one sister, Mrs. Louisa Wendler of Collinsville; four granddaughters, five grandsons, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
