James Ellis "Jack" Smith, 74, of Beatrice, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at the Washington Terrace Care Center in Utah. Jack was born to Raymond and Audrey Smith, May 24, 1939. His infectious smile and his big heart will be greatly missed.

Jack was loved by his friends and family. He was affectionately known by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Bumpa-Jack." He enjoyed the time he spent out on the farm and working in the salvage yard with his long time friend Clint.

Lately, "Pickers," "Storage Wars" and "Pawn Stars," drew the focus from his failing health and the discomfort of his cancer.

Jack lived most of his life around the Beatrice area and he was known for his many successful entrepreneurial pursuits. In 1959, Jack married Ester Sorge. He owned Smith Construction and he also worked for various construction companies. In 1967, He married Evelina (Baumfalk) Coates. He ran a recycling and salvage facility outside the Pickrell area for several years prior to his retirement in 2011. He served in the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged at the rank of Specialist E4.

Survivors include his three sons, Leonard Smith and wife Margaret of Howells, Scott Smith and wife Kelly of Davenport, and Darrin Smith and wife Kathy of Beatrice; two stepsons, Scott Coates and wife Leslee of South Ogden, Utah, and Dr. Sam Coates and wife Marina of Elk Ridge, Utah; daughter-in-law, Peggy Coates of Beatrice; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Audrey Smith, brother, William "Bill" Smith; his second wife, Evelina (Baumfalk) (Coates) Smith; stepson, Micheal Coates; and great-grandchild Clark Samuel Coates.

A private service will be held at a future date, when his cremains will be scattered with those of his second wife Evelina at her childhood farm.

We wish to thank the nursing staff at Washington Terrace Care Center, St Elizabeth Hospital, and Angel Flight transportation for their selfless service given to Jack.

Instead of flowers we ask that donations be made to your favorite charity in remembrance of Jack.
