Thomas served as cornet (that rank later to be called an ensign) and then a lieutenant in the 2d Continental Dragoons (out of Wethersfield, CT) until September 1778 when he became a spy for the American Cause under Benjamin Tallmadge - one of the Culper Spy Ring. Captured while in NY in 1780, tortured, transported to the British prison on Bermuda. Escaped in September 1783 in a small sailing craft, picked up by former co-prisoner Seth Overton (19318704) who left him at a port by request, and from there found passage back to Connecticut. Opened a tavern and began publishing the "Marine List" of ships coming and going in the port of New London, Connecticut, and having it published in the weekly Connecticut Gazette. Died while in Colchester and his remains were brought back to New London. They were first buried in New London's Second Burying Ground but were relocated to Cedar Grove Cemetery in 1851 when the elite in New London began to gentrify the higher ground and disliked having a burying ground in direct view.
