John Mathis, negro, was represented by 2 very able and prominent lawyers who saved him from the gallows. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Dr Hickman. His motive was robbery; he came away with Dr Hickman's gold watch, possession of which was instrumental in convicting him of the murder.

DR HICKMAN MURDERED, HAD RELATIVES IN MARIETTA
Dr Charles W Hickman, one of the most prominent physicians of the State, was murdered and robbed in Summerville, a suburb of Augusta, Tuesday night of last week. He was found dead on Milledge street, with a bullet wound in his head and another wound as if he had been sandbagged. His pockets had been rifled. Rewards aggregating $4,500 have been offered for the murderer.
Dr Hickman was related by marriage to the family of General Phillips of Marietta. He married Miss Eva Walton, a very beautiful young lady, niece of Mrs Phillips. She visited in this city a number of times and was greatly admired.
