World War 2 veteran - thank you

Doyle R. Miller, age 93, of Waterloo, died Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Windhaven Assisted Living Center in Cedar Falls.

He was born September 28, 1920 in Humeston, Iowa, the son of Bernard "Rush" and Pearl McDowell Miller. Doyle graduated from Beaconsfield (IA) High School. He was united in marriage with Verna J. Simonsen on October 12, 1941 in Princeton, MO. She preceded him in death on September 1, 2010.

Doyle was a special delivery carrier for the US Postal service for 31 years, retiring in 1980. He was a US Army Veteran serving during World War II as a tank driver in the European Theater. Doyle was a wounded prisoner of war the last four months of World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. His memberships included Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postal Retirees, and Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

Survivors include a son, Jim (Kim) Miller of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Julie (Michael) Simbric of Waterloo; 5 grandchildren, Jeff (Steff) Simbric, Jennifer (Adam) Wedeking, Sara Simbric, Jay Miller, and Kory Miller; 3 great grandchildren, Jordin and Logan Simbric and Morgan Wedeking; a brother, Clem (Carol) Hamilton, Jr. of Elk Run Heights; and a sister, Geraldine Crowley.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Clem Hamilton, Sr.; his stepmother, Goldie Miller; a brother, Russell Miller; 2 sisters, Bernadine Heinen and Marjorie Drake.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail. Public visitation will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel in Waterloo and an hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.
