The summer she was five years of age, the family moved to Nora, Nebraska and Bernice received her education in the Nora Schools, graduating from Nora High School with the class of 1929.
She taught in the rural schools for three years and then in the Nora Public Schools for three years.
On June 6, 1937 she was united in marriage to Ervin C. Ross in the Parsonage of the Methodist Church in Nora. One son, Gary E. Ross was born to them on October 25, 1939. In June of 1942 the family moved to Aurora. She returned to teaching in 1957 and taught in a rural school one year and in the Aurora District 4R school for 18 years, retiring in 1976. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kearney State College by attending summer school.
Bernice was a member of the United Methodist Church in Aurora and was a past President of the United Methodist Women, and had served as a Sunday School teacher and in many different areas of service. She was an active member of the Aurora Chapter No. 93 of the Order of Eastern Star and had served as Worthy Matron of the Star and held many other offices in the Lodge and was currently serving as musician for the Chapter. She was active in the Retired Teachers Association and had served as president of the organization. She was also a member of the Aurora Womens Club, American Home. She was pianist for the Aurora Lion's Club and had served as pianist for the Mens' Chorus at the United Methodist Church.
Her parents and one brother, Ward Hamel had preceded her in death.
Those who remain to cherish her memory are her husband, Ervin; their son, Gary E. Ross and his wife Jo Ellen; three granddaughters, Kelly, Shawna and Robyn Ross all of Aurora; three brothers, Harold Hamel of El Toro, California, Orin Hamel of San Juan Capistrano and Ralph Hamel of El Toro, California; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Buckert of Homeland, California and Mrs. Doris Oleson of Arapahoe, Nebraska; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and many close friends.
