Donald J. Addis was born June 16, 1916, the son of William J. and Nellie
L.Addis, at Chittenango Falls, in the town of Cazenovia, NY. He passed away
Sept. 27, 2010 in Corvallis, OR. Mr.Addis attended a one room country school
until the family moved to Syracuse where he completed grade school, high school
and college graduating from Syracuse University in 1936.
He joined the Kemper Insurance Companies and worked in the Syracuse, Buffalo and
Philadelphia offices before being transferred to the home office in Chicago and
moving to Winnetka and later to Libertyville, IL. Service with Kemper was
interrupted by 3 years service in the Army in World War II from which he was
discharged as a First Lieutenant in Military Intelligence.
The whole family was active in scouting and as chairman of the troop committee
in Winnetka, Mr. Addis was awarded The Order of the Arrow.
After 37 years with Kemper, he retired as 2nd Vice President in charge of
commercial casualty underwriting.
He also worked as Assistant Vice President of the American Mutual Insurance
Alliance, a trade association, and as an insurance consultant.
He was an ardent golfer and photographer and was active in local camera clubs
and the Chicago Area Camera Clubs Association where he served as Chairman of the
Large Print Competition and later the Small Print Competition.
He joined the Photographic Society of America in 1962 and was treasurer of
American Portfolios, a member of four of the portfolios and secretary of two.
He moved to Corvallis in 1997 where he was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church and the Military Officers Club.
He married Dorothy M. Harris in 1939, and had three sons.
They were divorced in 1977.
He is survived by three sons, Peter M. of Acton, MA,Daniel H. and William P. of
Corvallis, and a grandson, Orion M. of Portland.
He will be interred in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia, NY.
