"In high school, William was the star baseball pitcher and went to play for the Minor Leagues, the West Coast League and a season with the St. Louis Cardinals.
"William served proudly in the US Navy during WWII. Following the war, William played in the Minors for several years.
"He worked for Standard Oil of CA including field work and two years aboard one of the first Pacific oil research and extraction vessels.
"In 1949 William married Nancy Anne Urner, moved to Garden Grove, CA. They had a son, Gary Blackburn, in 1951.
From the mid-1950's until 1966 William was a fireman at the Garden Grove Fire Department. He enjoyed family life and sailing. William's interest in civic duty led him to become active in the growing causes of Civil Rights and opposition to US involvement in Vietnam."
