Born in Kenosha on Oct. 16, 1912, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick H. Carpenter. Frances graduated from Kemper Hall in Kenosha in 1931. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rockford College in Rockford, Ill., in 1935, and was awarded a Master of Arts degree in English from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1944. Frances taught English for 27 years at Kemper Hall in Kenosha, beginning in 1936, and always said she enjoyed every day of it. In addition, she was the Counselor to the senior class for many years. Frances was pleased and honored that so many former students kept in touch with her over the years and that she was remembered and loved by them. After the death of her father and later her mother (whom she cared for), Frances was active in the founding of Armitage Academy in Kenosha where she also taught English for several years. She was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Kenosha.
Frances will be fondly remembered for her passion for reading and her wealth of knowledge on many subjects. She loved the sport of baseball, whether it was reading about it, watching a game on t.v. or attending many Chicago Cubs games with her family. Frances was a remarkable, determined, independent and kind lady. Her use of proper English, extensive vocabulary, impeccable manners and gracious nature will always be remembered by those that knew her.
Frances is survived by her loving sister, Susan Mary Young of Cedar Key, Fla.; her nieces, Jane K. Carpenter of Elmhurst, Ill., and Susan Skorey of San Jose, Calif., and her dear friend and caretaker, Eleanor Soronen of Kenosha. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Nathaniel, and her sister Florence.
Funeral services for Miss Carpenter will be held at
2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church (5900 7th Avenue) with inurnment to follow in Green Ridge Cemetery.
A special thank you to St. Josephs Home and staff for the kind and compassionate care they gave her over the years.
