Some confusion exists surrounding Mary's middle name, perpetuated unfortunately by having an anglicized spelling of it placed on her gravestone. While the stone reads "M. Catharine Layman", and she was indeed known by her middle name, she wrote that name "Kathryn" and not Catharine or Catherine. She signed both the front and back of her hymnal - "Mrs. M. K. Layman" in one place and "Kathryn Layman" in the other. It is easily seen from her beautiful, fluid handwriting that both signatures were made by the same person.

Kathryn was a great-granddaughter of the "drummer boy of the Conococheague", Johann Ludwig Detrich, who had faithfully served the American Revolutionary cause. She grew up a farmer's daughter near Greencastle, Pennsylvania and quite naturally and easily settled into the life of a farmer's wife. Her husband was Benjamin Franklin Layman, who also was of German descent. Their shared ethnicity and shared culture were only enhanced by a shared faith, worshipping at Harbaugh Reformed and later at Trinity Reformed Church. Kathryn's faith is evidenced by the fact that she owned her own hymnal and placed her signature therein.

Mrs. Mary Catherine Layman, widow of the late Benjamin Franklin Layman who died eight months ago, died at her home, 44 Clayton Avenue, Sunday at 12:45 p.m. from double pneumonia following an illness of only two days although she had been an invalid since she suffered a stroke of paralysis about three and a half years ago. She was aged 78 years, 3 months and 14 days.

Mrs. Layman was born in Greencastle, the daughter of John and Catherine Talhelm Detrich deceased. She was a devout Christian vein confirmed when she was 16 years of age in the Grace Reformed Church, Greencastle. During the greater part of her married life she was a member and active worker in Harbaugh Reformed Church. During the last 15 years she had lived in Waynesboro and transferred her membership to Trinity Reformed Church where she was a regular attendant as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by five children; Mrs. Ernest Baker, at home; Charles D. Layman, North Church Street extended; Bruce C. Layman, west of town; John W., South Church Street and Miss Hazel at home; three sisters: Mrs. Margaret Goetz, Greencastle; Mrs. John Sarbaugh and Mrs. Belle Grove, of Shady Grove, also eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Samuel E. Lobach assisted by Rev. Joseph E. Guy, her present and one of her former pastors respectively. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to attend without further notice.

The body may be viewed Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.
