HERALD EUGENE GRIFFITH OCT 31, 1926 - JUNE 9, 2010 Herald was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and attended schools in the Conemaugh Township school district; after graduation he was drafted into the United States Navy during the last year of World War II, and was stationed both shipboard and in the Manicani Islands. Afterward, he received his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and was employed by the Heinz Company as an engineer. He ended his career with Heinz in 1973, as a Vice President of Engineering and relocated to Modesto, CA where he worked for Tri-Valley Growers for nineteen years, building several regional plants and completing his career as Vice President of Engineering. During his career he was a member of the California League of Food Processors, and earned several awards for innovation and conservation in the food processing industry. He also managed to find time for involvement in the Boy Scouts of America, the Tracy Kiwanis Club, and the Tracy Jr. Chamber of Commerce. Herald married Jane Rummel on May 19, 1951 at the Pittsburgh Church of the Brethren. Always a family-oriented man, Herald continued his "college spaghetti" tradition throughout the years, supplementing his cooking with worldwide fishing expeditions, his beloved golfing, and teaching his grandkids to make orange juice straight from the tree. He has also been involved with his local church family at the Geneva Presbyterian Church as an elder and member of the session, as well as a driving force behind their Men's Group breakfast. He will be remembered for his kindness, hospitality, warm smile, and hearty laughter. He is survived by his wife, Jane Griffith; daughter Barbara and husband Jim Balzer of Modesto, CA; son Bill and wife Betsy Griffith of Twain Harte, CA; daughter-in-law Louann Griffith-Weingartner of New Castle, PA; and brother Robert Griffith of Eugene, OR. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lani, Shara, and Emily Balzer, Eric and Sean Griffith, and Jessica and Jason Griffith, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Carrie Griffith, his sister, Shirley Schrock, and a son, Dr. R. Scott Griffith. A celebration of his life is planned for Sunday, June 13th at 3:30pm at Geneva Presbyterian Church, 1229 East Fairmont Ave., Modesto, CA 95350. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted in his memory to the Memorial Fund of Geneva Presbyterian Church. www.modbee.com/obituaries.
