H. DeWald, Dies, Served State Legion

Harold L. DeWald, 64, former State Treasurer of the Department of New York, American Legion, for eight years and cashier of the former 1st National Bank of Philmont, died at the U. S. Veterans' Hospital at Montrose, N. Y., Sunday, after an illness of nearly nine years.
Born in Catskill, the son of the late Frederick and Alice Hill DeWald, May 28, 1891, he came to Philmont as a boy and later attended the Albany Business College.
He then entered the services of the bank where he remained for almost 25 years with the exception of his war service.
During World War I he was overseas for a year with the AEF.
After leaving the bank, he was with the Home Owners Loan Organization and for 17 years was an auditor with the Unemployment Insurance Department. He entered Montrose nearly four years ago.
Mr. DeWald was at one time treasurer of the Village of Philmont as well as that of Minkler-Seery Post of the Legion, to which he belonged. He was an ex-member of the Philmont Volunteer Fire Company, the Columbia County Firemen's Association, of which he was the second president, the Hudson Valley Firemen's Association, Hudson Lodge No. 7, F. & A. M., and the Philmont Rod and Gun Club. The Minkler-Seery Post-members met Tuesday night when they conducted services at the Traver Funeral Home.
Mr. DeWald is survived by his wife, the former Clara Hopkins, two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Jennings, of Philmont, and Mrs. James Vasilow [SIC - Ethel (nee DeWald) Vasilow, was his sister, his first daughter was Helen H. (nee DeWald), wife of James A. Maloy, second daughter was Mary E. (nee DeWald), wife of Elmer Jennings], of Hudson, five grandchildren and one niece and one nephew [Pat Campbell and Fred H. DeWald].
His- funeral was held at the fuheral home Wednesday morning with the Rev. Philip Dwyer officiating and with burial with full military honors rendered by his Post of the Legion at the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
