Joan Mendum Sparks passed away from complications of Parkinson's disease on November 13, 2013. She was born May 1, 1937, in Forest, MS, and was the daughter of the late Mabel Goodson Mendum and William David Mendum, Sr.

Joan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Smith Sparks, of Clinton, MS. Her sons Stephen Vincent Sparks and his wife D'Ann of Richardson, Texas, Kendall Brian Sparks of New York City, New York, and grandchildren, Chloe Catherine Sparks and Jude Vincent Sparks, of Richardson, Texas.

Her daughter, Julie Elise Sparks of Clinton, MS, and her brother William David Mendum, Jr., of Tallapoosa, GA, preceded her in death.

Joan loved music and loved to sing. She received her B.S. Degree in Music Education from Belhaven, University and a Masters Degree in Vocal Music from Mississippi College. She was a choral music teacher at Raymond and Laurel, MS, and was a long time devoted member of the Chancel Choir, Senior Adult Joy Makers Choir and rang hand bells with the Joy Bell Choir all of First Baptist Church, Clinton, MS. She was a member of the Clinton Music Club and ministered through her music to the three health care facilities in Clinton. She was choir director at First Baptist Church, Raymond, MS, and Northside Baptist Church, Clinton, MS.

Joan went back to school after 20 years being out of college and received her LPN nursing degree and worked at the Mississippi Baptist Hospital for a brief period of time.

She later provided loving care through private duty nursing. Joan loved children and excelled in teaching choral music and directing children choirs. Later, she found fulfillment in working with children with special needs as a teacher assistant in the Clinton School District.

Her life will be celebrated at First Baptist Church, Clinton, MS, on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 11am. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Lakewood Funeral Home 6011 Clinton Boulevard, Jackson, and again 10am Monday at the church. She will be remembered as a sweet and loving wife, mother, and grandmother and for her witty comments by her family and loved ones she leaves behind.
