Lieutenant Colonel Austin "Gus" Julian Jr.

Austin Augusta Julian, Jr.—"Gus"—was born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee on November 2, 1922 to Betty Ellen and Austin A. Julian. Gus was the youngest of 10 children.

When WWII broke out, Gus enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944. He met and married Mary Theresa "Tess" Prescott, a young Navy WAVE from Wendell, Idaho, while stationed at Wheeler Army Air Field in the Territory of Hawaii in September of 1948.

Subsequently, Gus spent 29 years of honorable service in the United States Air Force that culminated in more than 85,000 flying hours in over 118 different aircraft. Lt. Col. Julian was one of the first pilots to graduate from the prestigious United States Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. This was a direct reflection on his excellent pilot skills and resulted in his considerable influence on the design and development of multiple USAF aircraft during three tours at Edwards Air Force Base. One of his proudest accomplishments was completion of the initial testing of in-flight refueling. Lt. Col. Julian served his country in 3 major conflicts: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Lt. Col. Julian received a Bachelor of Military Science degree from the University of Omaha. He was also a graduate of the United States Air Force Command and Staff College. His military awards include: Bronze Star with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. Lt. Col. Julian finished his distinguished career serving as Director of Flight Test Operations, Edward AFB, California, in 1972.

Gus was a lifelong avid fly-fisherman and hunter. He spent every fishing season for the last 30 years at his favorite piece of heaven at his home on Henry's Lake, Idaho.

Gus was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary Theresa (Tess) Prescott Julian.

Survived by daughters Linda Dorsett (Tracy) of Pottsboro, Texas; Donna Julian of Henderson, Nevada; and Susan Sommerkorn (Wilf) of Kaysville, Utah; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
