Obituary:
Rowena Ellen Benjamin, a resident of Odell, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 at Hood River Care Center. She was 78 years of age.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 4, 2001 from noon to 3 p. m. at Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 5, 2001 at 1 p.m. at the Hood River Alliance Church, on the corner of Montello and Rand.
Concluding service and vault interment will be at Idlewild Cemetery.
Rowena was born May 21, 1922 in Yakima, Wash., to Cecil and Ruby (Bradshaw) Halbrook.
She was raised and educated in Wapato, Wash., coming to Hood River in 1955. Rowena went to work at Stadelman's in 1963 until 1974, where she worked in many capacities. She also worked at Wy'east High School cafeteria as an assistant cook to Clara Ostergard. After her retirement Rowena and her husband Pete did a lot of traveling to the Lions Conventions.
She was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her main hobby was being active in all of her children's and grandchildren's activities. She also enjoyed yard work, gardening, sewing and playing cards. Rowena was a member of the local American Legion Women's Auxiliary for 16 years.
She also assisted Pete with the Legion baseball program by working in the snack bar and one year sewed 19 baseball uniforms for the team.
Her sons, Randy Benjamin and his wife Kelly, and Rick Benjamin and his wife, Bette, both of Parkdale survive her. One daughter, Rita Stanton, and her husband, Bruce, of Hood River also survive her. Nine grandchildren, Dana and Erin Benjamin, Lindsay McNamara, Vanessa Rice, Cecily and Lindsey Benjamin, Nathan and Nicholas Stanton and Brad Hanel also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willis "Pete" Benjamin in 2000, and by one daughter; Roxee Hanel.
