Annie, as she was called, is the eldest daughter of the 9 children of Master Mariner John & Mary (née Morgan) Gowan of Skerries, Co. Dublin.

Prior to her marriage, she primarily used the Gowan form of her Gowan / McGowan surname.

In 1877, she married John Adams, a Master Mariner who sailed out of Skerries Harbour. A year later her father, Master Mariner John Gowan, was lost at sea with his ship Reaper & all his crew off the coast of Angelsey, North Wales.

While Annie & John maried young, there is no record yet found of them having children. It's believed Annie had babies who died at birth or in infancy, but this aspect of her life will remain a mystery, forever lost to time.

She kept their home on Little Strand Street while Capt. John was off sailing. By 1917, in advancing age, yet still needing an income, Captain Adams did what many older Master Mariners of the time did; he hired himself out as Mate to a younger Captain. At the age of 68, Capt. Adams became Mate Adams on the ship Kangaroo owned by his friend & Skerries neighbor, Capt. Jimmie Mansfield.

John set out on a routine run aboard Kangaroo that June and never returned. He, along with the rest of the crew were shot to death by a German submarine crew and the Kangaroo sunk. His body was never recovered, lost to the sea.

It was after becoming a widow that Annie moved into the Little Strand Street home of her sister Mary McGowan, who was living alone since the death of their elderly mother, who passed away just weeks after the Easter Rising of 1916.

At the time of her passing, while having no children of her own, Ann was a cherished Aunt to her many Mansfield grand-nephews & grand-niece Alice Mansfield, with whom she was very close.

✞ Ann Adams is buried at Holmpatrick Graveyard in the Murray family plot. Buried with her are her brother in-law Charlie Murray and her sisters Martha Murray & Mary McGowan.
In 2013, Ann's husband Captain John Adams & her father Captain John Gowan were given their own place of remembrance in Skerries when their names were inscribed on the Sea Pole Memorial, with a dedication ceremony by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins.
