Lonnie Arnold, 82, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, surrounded by his wife and family at the Freedom Pointe senior living center in Overland Park. Lonnie was born Jan. 20, 1931, to Carol and Vera Arnold in Cassville, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Martha (Marty) Arnold; step-daughter, Dorothy O'Brien; step-son, Hayden Cuthrell and sister, Dorothy Scott.
He married Dolores Eileen (Dodson) Moreland on June 24, 1989. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include step-daughters; Janice Pieper, Kailua-Kona, HI; Elizabeth Teel, Wendell, NC; Michelle Ohlson, Garner, NC; Juanita Boro, Idaho; Mary Jo Carey, Delaware; step-sons, Thomas Moreland, Olathe, KS; Joseph Moreland, Independence, MO; Robert Cuthrell, Delaware; 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brothers Jerry Arnold, Liberty, MO; Bob Arnold, Lake of the Ozarks, MO; Jim Arnold, Poley, AL and Herb Arnold, Williamsburg, VA.
He moved to Kansas City, MO and enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves. His unit was called to serve in the Korean Conflict. Lonnie served four years in the Army and in 1951, after receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Kansas City. In 1956, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served in Vietnam with the 4th Air Commando Squadron and served as a small arms expert and gunner. For his service, he received two Distinguished Flying Crosses for valor and was awarded eleven air medals for participating in 203 combat missions. The Air Medals were awarded to Lonnie for his meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight and for his Vietnam Service Medal. After retiring from the Air Force as a Technical Sergeant in 1973, Lonnie served as a correctional officer with the Delaware Department of Corrections, retiring in 1989.
Lonnie loved to cook for his family and was famous for his homemade biscuits and gravy and "chicken and slicks". He honored his country and was very proud of his service, which could be seen through his extensive collection of eagles and his numerous patriotic tattoos, including his bald eagle and "sweet and sour" tattoos. He spent hours with his grandchildren, telling stories about his days as a war hero and a prison guard and teaching them to play numerous card games.
