James Edward Minyard was born on March 3, 1920 at Oklahoma City, Okla. He was the oldest of three children born to Simon Perry and Easter Jones Minyard. Jim grew up in Weatherford, Okla. and graduated from Weatherford High School in 1940.
Jim was married to (Thelma) Hope Mericle on Sept. 16, 1940 at Clinton, Okla. Jim joined the United States Navy during World War II and served on the destroyer HJ Ellison from 1944 until his discharge in 1946.
He returned to Weatherford and started college along with working with his brother in a machine shop-auto body repair business. He was part of the R.O.T.C in college and when the Korean War broke out in 1950 Jim was called into the United States Army. He served as a machinist in the 45 Infantry division (Thunderbirds) in Korea and had reached the rank of corporal. After his discharge he returned to Weatherford and finished college.
Jim and Hope moved to Kansas City where he interned at Kansas City General. They later moved to Greeley, Colo. where Jim worked for the hospital in pathology. They retired in 1973 and moved to Crawford, Neb. They enjoyed collecting and refurbishing furniture and antiques.
While living in Crawford Jim and Hope were entertaining musicians with Jim on the fiddle and Hope on the guitar. They made appearances at Ft. Robinson and the Nebraska State Fair.
Jim had fallen in March and fractured some ribs. They moved to the Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland, Neb. to be closer to family. Jim died at the Care Center on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 12, 2013. He had reached the age of 93.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry Lynne Minyard-Wolf.
He is survived by his wife of over 73 years, Hope; one son, Denzle (Denny) Minyard of Palestine, Texas; six grandchildren, Marilyn Miller, Mickey Phillips, Robert and Brian Minyard, and Colin Donahue and Kelly Donahue Musil; one brother, Denzle Minyard and one sister, Nova June Schafer, both of Weatherford; other relatives and friends.
Committal services were held on Friday, Nov. 15, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant, Neb. was in charge of arrangements.
