Robert Nelson Gerdes, 81, Shawnee died Sunday, November 10, in Anthem, Arizona.

Robert Nelson Gerdes was born November 27, 1931 in Edmond, Oklahoma, the son of Bernard and Bessie Gerdes. He was raised in Wellston, OK, graduating from Wellston High School in 1949. He attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, receiving an Associate of Arts Degree. Later he attended Oklahoma A&M College, where he received both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Agricultural Education. On May 26, 1954 he married Melba Ruby Bierman in Wellston, OK. In 1956, after his two year duty in the U.S. Army, they moved to Falls City, Nebraska. They then moved to Tecumseh, NE in 1959, where he was the County Extension Agent. In 1965 they moved to Shawnee, OK where they opened Gerdes Garden Center, which remained in operation until 2003.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ben Gerdes, Wellston.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Wendy Gerdes, Edmond; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Eddy Ball, Anthem, AZ; grandchildren, Lucas Gerdes and Ryann Gerdes, Edmond, and Chelsie Ball and Denton Ball, Anthem, AZ; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Jane Bierman, Shawnee.
