Virgie Ernestine Lairson passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was surrounded by family then as she was much of the last years of her full life.Virgie was born April 11, 1918 in Morgan County, Kentucky the third of five children of James and Anna Nickell. Virgie and her family remained in Kentucky until they moved to Hamilton, Ohio sometime in the 1930s where she would eventually meet Arthur Clayton Lairson. Virgie and Art were later married on February 28, 1940 in Hamilton. Virgie and Art remained in Hamilton where they raised their three children and started a service station business. They moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1970 where they began a Gulf Oil service station near the corner of Atlantic and University Blvds. Virgie was a vital part of the station's success as she performed the bookkeeping and assisted the many customers who frequented the business. Virgie and Art sold their business and retired sometime before 1980. In the remaining decades of her life, Virgie spent much of her time traveling, gardening, and spending time with her family. The home she made with Art was the scene of many family dinners and holiday celebrations. Her grandchildren especially loved to visit and enjoy the meals Virgie put together. When Virgie was not being a homemaker, she enjoyed music and homespun crafts including crocheting.She is survived by her three children: Larry Lairson, Vera Pierce, and Cathy Lipscomb, all of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Larry Lairson Jr., Robert Pierce, JoAnne Pierce, Corrine Hansen, Michael Lipscomb, Michelle Lipscomb, David Lairson, and Sherry Windsor; and six great grandchildren Scott Pierce, Charles Lipscomb, Jack Lipscomb, Ian Hansen, Vernon Hansen "Chaz", and Owen Windsor. Virgie was laid to rest alongside Art on Tuesday, November 12 in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens in Jacksonville.
