US Army Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1879 and was commissioned in the 3rd Cavalry. He performed duty on the Western frontier in the 1880s, including the Ute and Apache Expeditions. In the 1890s his assignments included Instructor at both West Point and the Infantry and Cavalry School at Ft. Leavenworth. During the Spanish-American War he served in Cuba with the 5th Cavalry, and received two Silver Stars. In the years prior to World War I he served in Cuba, the Philippines, and on the Army staff in Washington. In 1916 he commanded the 8th Cavalry on the border with Mexico during the Pancho Villa Expedition. During World War I he was promoted to Brigadier General and commanded the 176th Infantry Brigade and the 88th Division in France, for which he received the Distinguished Service Medal. He was also a recipient of the French Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honor. He retired in 1920, and resided in San Diego, where he authored books and articles on military engineering and other military topics.
