Walter J. Pope, 91, of Smithville, MO formerly of Holt, MO passed away Monday, November 11, 2013.

He was born on August 9, 1922 to John C. and Pearl (Bonner) Pope in Buchanan, Georgia. He grew up in Pruett, AR where he attended school. Walter then served his country in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII.

He worked for the State of Missouri as a heavy equipment operator for many years, and later worked for Wait's Ditching.

Walter was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #236 in Exclesior Springs, MO where he served as an officer. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, bingo, and coaching baseball. Walter was always supportive of his family, and especially there for his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Chad, Jack, Joe, and Paul; sisters, Nona and Ruby, step-mother, Edith, step-brother, Melvin, and his wife, Lena.

Walter is survived by his sister, Leo Sumpter; sister-in-law, Joann Pope; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 15th at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Smithville.
Burial with Military Honors: New Hope, Cemetery, Holt, MO.
