TWIN FALLS — Gordon George Bixler, 89, formerly of Boise, Idaho, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 10. 2013, at Stoney Creek Assisted Living Center in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Gordon had a flair for telling a life story. He will be greatly missed but many wonderful memories will remain.

Gordon was born near Willow Lakes, South Dakota, to George Bixler and Clara (O’Brien) Bixler. He moved at the age of 2 to Minneapolis, MN. The family, within the next years, moved to Aurora, IL, and finally Geneva, IL, where Gordon graduated from Geneva High School in 1942.

War was upon our country and Gordon enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He spent 36 months with the North Atlantic Patrol. When he returned home, he enrolled at North West Missouri University to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

Upon graduating, he became manager of an ice and coal company in Villisca, IA. He married his college sweetheart, Dorotha Adams, in June 1950 and began working for Swift and Co. in St. Joseph, MO. He held various positions with Swift and Co., living in the Chicago area and then Des Moines, IA.

While in Des Moines, Gordon became involved in the credit union movement and moved the family to Minneapolis, MN. Here he worked as a field representative with the Minnesota Credit Union League. Within a few years, Gordon joined Credit Union International (CUNA) in Madison, WI as an educational specialist. He traveled extensively throughout North and South America presenting educational training to credit union personnel.

In 1972 he became the president of the Idaho Credit Union League and this brought the family out West to Boise, ID. After retiring, he continued to do business consulting work pertaining to organizational structures and management throughout the West. Always enjoying work, in 1990 he began working for H&R Block during tax season. Eventually he became the State Street branch manager.

Gordon enjoyed rock hunting and turning his finds into jewelry, needle pointing pictures, their cabin at Cascade, skiing, cycling, bowling, golfing and traveling. He cherished spending time with his family and using his time shares with them at Sun River, Ore., and at Disney World in Florida.

Dorotha was the love of Gordon’s life for 63 years of marriage and together, they lived life to the fullest, traveling to visit friends and family and to see the sites in many places such as Hawaii, Alaska, Big Sky, Vegas, and Sonoma. They were involved in and supported their church, Whitney United Methodist Church of Boise. Gordon helped Dorotha tend and prune their beautiful roses at their home and it was just as much his pride and care as Dorotha’s.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Dorotha Bixler, of Stoney Creek Assisted Living Center in Twin Falls; daughter, Rebecca Bixler of Maryville, MO; son, Gary (Leann) Bixler, of Albuquerque, NM, and their children, Travis of Spokane, WA, and Alissa (Chris) Munoz, of Spokane, WA; son, Tom (Christine) Bixler, of Twin Falls, and their children: Scott (Liz) Bixler, of Boise, Angela Bixler and Julie Bixler, of Twin Falls; son, John (Lori) Bixler, of Kent, WA, and their children: Devon Williams and Kaylea Williams, of Kent, WA; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Bixler, of Maryville, MO.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Robert Bixler.

There will be a small memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in the chapel at the Twin Falls Reformed Church, with Pastor Brian Vriesman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

The family would like to thank the staff of Stoney Creek for their wonderful care and Hospice Visions for all they did for him at the end.
