Melba was married to the late Clarence Day on June 20, 1942 in LaGrange, GA. He preceded her in death on October 31, 1948, she then married the late Howard R. Dill June 8, 1954 in LaGrange, GA, he preceded her in death on January 15, 2004.
Melba received her early education in Georgia, receiving her Bachelors Degree from LaGrange College, one of the oldest colleges for women in the United States. After graduation she taught voice in the Music Department at LaGrange College for seven years. She then received her Master of Music Degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. When asked what events led her to enter music as a profession, Melba lists the encouragement from her teachers, having her own local radio program during her college days, and having an opportunity to sing minor roles and in the chorus with the Toledo Light Opera Company for a summer in 1941. Since coming to DeKalb she has taught private voice lessons, and both Howard and Melba have been involved in singing and directing church music in the local churches. Melba has been a member of the DeKalb Woman's Club since 1958, and served two terms as president, and she joined the Drama Club in 1978, and was president in 1986, and is a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeKalb. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, and music.

Memorial service was held Saturday, April 28, 2007 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeKalb with Pastors Joseph Gastiger and Judy Harris officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Park Cemetery DeKalb.
