She moved to Brevard in 1941, to attend Brevard College, and met her future husband Luther Edward "L. E." Callender.
In 1977 she was named Transylvania County's "Woman of the Year" primarily for her work with the Cedar Mountain Community Center.
She died at McCall Hospice House.
