Robert (Bob) Bernard Reed
(May 27, 1922 - November 11, 2013)

Bob was born at home in Kalamazoo, MI on May 27, 1922 to Bernard Roscoe Reed and Arloa Marion (Bates) Reed. He died on November 11, 2013 at the age of 91 years. He graduated from high school in Hastings, MI in 1940. That fall he entered the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan where he spent two years. In 1942 he received a scholarship to Webb Institute of Naval Architecture where he matriculated that fall. In June of 1945 he graduated with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. After graduation he attended the navy's Midshipmen's School at the University of Notre Dame and was commissioned an Ensign in the navy after which he was attached to the Office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Electric Boat Co., Groton, CN until released to inactive duty in the spring of 1946.

On June 17, 1950 he married Helen Adrienne Reiner in the Presbyterian Church in Cambridge, WI. In the fall of 1952 he was recalled to active duty in the navy as Inspection Officer for a landing vehicle contract in Lima, OH. After his released from active duty in the fall of 1953 he remained active in the naval reserves until he retired from the navy in 1982.

He then worked as an industrial engineer in Kankakee, IL until 1959 when he became employed in the engineering department of Manitowoc Shipbuilding in Manitowoc, WI. After the Manitowoc, Co. moved their shipbuilding activities to their Bay Shipbuilding shipyard in Sturgeon Bay, WI, he moved there with his family in 1971 and retired as their Naval Architect in 1987.

Bob was a past member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and also a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Bay View Lutheran Church where he served 2 terms on the church council and was on the 1978 building committee. He was a member of the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club for 25 years where he served on the Board of Directors, as Secretary, Vice Commodore and Commodore in 1980. He was a member of the Bay Ship retirees club and their president in 1990. He was also a member of the Door County Historical Society and the Maritime Museum. He was one of the charter members of the Friends of Potawatomi State Park and a board of director for 10 years. He and his wife Helen were instrumental in the renovation of the playgrounds in the park.

He and his wife Helen were both active genealogists. Bob was a member of "The General Society of Mayflower Descendants" through his Mayflower ancestors Richard Warren, Francis Cooke and his son John. He was also a member of the "The Son's of the American Revolution" through his Third Great Grandfather John Reed who was born in Ireland and who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

Bob and Helen enjoyed camping with their children while they were growing up. They rented a popup camper and camped from coast to coast. When Bob retired, they bought a motorhome and put 65,000 miles on it camping in all 48 contiguous states.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Cyntheal. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Helen, son David (Jeana) Reed, Waukesha, WI, grandchildren Christopher (Tricia) Reed, great-grandson Finnley, Rebecca (David) Goecke, great grandson Nathaniel, his daughter Julia (William) Meyers, Waterford, WI, his son John (Lynne) Reed, Sedalia, MO, and grandsons Joel and Noah.

Services will be held at Bay View Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at 2:00 p.m. Military honors will follow. Interment will be at Lake Ripley cemetery Cambridge, WI. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Friends of Potawatomi State Park, The Sail Training Foundation, Inc. of the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club, or Bay View Lutheran Church.
