The actual birth and death dates of Frederick are unknown. See biographical section below. Frederick was born in Maryland to Jacob Grumbach. He is one of the two sons of Jacob whose surname eventually became "Crubaugh". Two other sons eventually became "Crobaugh", one son became "Grubaugh" and one son became "Crumbaugh".

Frederick married Ester "Hetty" Gress in 1795 and they were the parents of at least nine children. Frederick moved from Pennsylvania to Columbiana County, OH sometime about 1810. Frederick died sometime between 1820 and 1830.

FREDERICK CRUBAUGH (Circa 1774-1820/30)

Frederick was the next to the last son of Jacob Grumbach. He was born in Frederick County Maryland. Sometime around the year of 1795, Frederick was wedded to Ester "Hetty" Gress in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Ester, who was born between the years of 1776 and 1780, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gress of East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Ester had at least two brothers and three sisters, names unknown. Her father, Henry, died sometime prior to the year of 1800, when less than 45 years of age. Her mother died sometime after 1800, although it is not known where or when her death occurred.
During the 1800 Federal Census Count, Frederick was listed as Head of Household in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, PA.
According to "The History of Columbiana County, Ohio", published in 1879, "Frederick Crubaugh was one of the original settlers in the western part of Centre Town-ship in 1808, along with Gabriel Laird, Robert Blackledge, Jesse and Conrad Brandeberry, George Lee, Henry Harlan, Andrew Kuhn, and Martin Breidenstein." This group of pioneers settled sections 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33 of Centre Township. Frederick settled in the southeast part of section 33.
Frederick and Ester were parents of at least nine children, seven sons and two daughters. At least five of these children were born in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. A son, whose name is now unknown, was born there sometime between the years of 1795 and 1798. Their daughter Issabella, was born there during that same time period. Three more sons were born in East Pennsboro Township: Isaac in 1799, Frederick II in 1800, and George in 1804. Another son and another daughter, whose names are now unknown, were born between the years of 1805 and 1809. Either, or both of these children may have been born in East Pennsboro Township or in Centre Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. The three children, names now unknown, were demographically profiled in the household of their parents during the 1820 Census in Columbiana County, Ohio. Nothing more is known about them. The two youngest children of Frederick and Ester, William and John, were born in 1810 and 1812, respectively.
The six children of Frederick and Ester, whose names are known, were married in Columbiana County. Isaac was married to Catherine Altman on April 6, 1819. Issabella married Nicholas Wilson on April 10, 1821. George was married to Elizabeth Atterholt on November 8, 1825. Frederick II married Elizabeth Moore on May 20, 1830. William was married to Rosanah Grimesey on March 19, 1835, and John married his first wife, Mary, sometime between the years of 1835 and 1840.
Frederick was a farmer who also listed his occupation on the 1820 Census for Ohio, as a manufacturer. It is not known what he manufactured. His death occurred sometime between the years of 1820 and 1830, when he was between 46 and 56 years of age. His widow, Ester, died sometime between the years of 1840 and 1850, when she was between 64 and 74 years of age. They most likely were buried in the Trinity Refomed Church Cemetery, which was situated in close proximity to their home. Their son, Isaac, buried his first wife, Catherine in this cemetery in December of 1854.
