In 1852 he went to California by way of the Isthmus and 12 years were spent in mining there.
On July 18, 1861 while on a visit to Maine he was married to Julia Prenstiss Howe.
To them were born twelve children. Eight of whom are living. One daughter and three sons having preceded him in death.

Amasa came to Chester in 1866 and was for many years a prominent and respected resident of that community. In 1882 the family moved to Grinnell in order that the large family of children might have the advantages of the educational facilities offered here. Four of the children are graduates from college.
He united with the Chester Congregational Church in the early seventies and was loyal to that church even after transferring his membership to the Grinnell Congregational church.
