On Friday, October 25, 2013, Gary N. Wise, age 64, former national organizing director for the International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America (IUE-CWA), died at home, following a two-year battle with lung cancer. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Wise joined the U.S. Marines in 1967 following his graduation from high school. He served as a forward radio operator during his tour of duty in Vietnam.
After returning from military service in 1971, Mr. Wise took a job at Cincinnati Time Recorder (CTR). He became active in IUE Local 765, which represented CTR employees, becoming shop steward and a short time later president of the local union. He was hired by IUE District 7 in 1977, and served in several positions, including education director. Mr. Wise was recruited in 1984 to come to union headquarters in Washington, DC to be assistant organizing director. In 1996, he was named national organizing director for IUE-CWA, a position he held until his retirement in 2003.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Stephanie Strief Wise of Silver Spring, Maryland, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Wise will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, at a future date to be determined, and a memorial service will be held at that time.
