COLORADO — Elizabeth Newkirk Kelso, born January 30, 1950, in Galveston died Saturday morning March 7, 2009, at her home in Denver, Colorado, following a long illness.

She was the daughter of Alvin Newkirk Kelso and the granddaughter of Walter and Elizabeth Kelso and John and Eugenia Harris, all of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her mother Joan Harris Kelso; her two brothers Alvin Newkirk Kelso, Jr., and John Woods Kelso, his wife Margaret and their children, John Woods Kelso, Jr., Zachary Bruce Williams, Scott Alvin Kelso, Wade Field Williams, Luke Taylor Kelso, and Joan Elizabeth Kelso, as well as her devoted friend LeAnn Shepard of Denver. She is also survived by an aunt, Eugenia Harris Campbell, and numerous cousins, including Eugenia (Jeannie) Campbell, Archibald R. Campbell III, John Campbell, Douglas Campbell, Marshall McDonald, Davis McDonald, James McDonald, Alexandra Hutchins, Meredith Mercer, Donald Miller, Ian Miller, Walter A. (Butch) Kelso III, Judy Kelso, Mark Kelso, Rai Kelso Thompson, and Lawrence Kelso.

Known to both family and friends as Betsy, she graduated from Ball High School in 1968. She began her undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and later received a B.A. in Psychology and Spanish from Colorado Women’s College in 1978. She was awarded both a masters and doctorate degree in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1986.

Over the next twenty years Betsy became a respected member of the psychological community in Denver. A licensed psychologist, she was a member of the American Psychological Association and Colorado Women Psychologists. In addition to maintaining a private practice, she was active in the supervision and training of fellow therapists.

A private service was held on Monday, March 16 at Trinity Episcopal Church followed by burial at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock. Any memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity Episcopal School, or the charity of one’s choice.
