Upon arriving in Vietnam, Louis was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Louis assigned to a security detail on a truck convoy when the convoy was ambushed by hostile forces. Louis died as a result of a hostile gunshot wound to the chest.
