1781 Los Angeles Poblador (Escolta)
Antonio Cota y León was the son of soldado Andrés Cota and Angela León. He enlisted as a soldado de cuera (leather jacket) at Loreto, Baja California, about 1750. Antonio accompanied Colonel Portolá to San Diego in 1769 and remained in Alta California. Antonio married María Bernarda "Chigila" (no surname), a Native American convert, at Mission San Juan Capistrano August 30, 1778 (SJC Marriage 00026). Antonio and his brother, soldado Roque Jacinto Cota y León, were part of the four-member escolta that accompanied the pobladores from Mission San Gabriel to establish el pueblo de los Angeles in September 1781. Antonio retired at Los Angeles, where he died on June 11, 1815. He was buried in the San Gabriel Mission Cemetery June 12, 1815 (SG Death 03635).
