Founder of the La Quinta Resort in La Quinta (Riverside County), CA.

His father was Captain John Stillwell Morgan who began the Morgan Oyster Company in 1851 and by the mid 1880s had over 100 acres of oyster beds in the San Francisco Bay. Due to increasing pollution, the oyster beds were moved to cleaner waters in Tomales Bay and in 1913 his oyster bed holdings were purchased by the Tomales Bay Oyster Company.

According to the 1870 US Census for San Francisco, CA, Walter is the youngest son of John S. Morgan (born 1828 NY) and his wife S. E. (Sophia Eleanor Crellin) Morgan born 1841 Isle of Man, England. John is listed as an oyster dealer.

In 1897, Walter is listed as a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity at UC Berkeley as a sophomore in Law.

In the 1900 US Census for SF, Walter is listed as a gold miner living with his brother Fred (born 1862) a Vice President of an oyster company. Their mother is listed with them as a widow with 6 of her 8 children still living. Their sister Ella (age 22) is with them.

In the 1930 US Census, Walter is listed as a widower, living in Indio, Riverside County, CA. His occupation is hotel manager.

With failing health from tuberculosis and financial set backs, Walter ended his own life.
