Leonard "Amos" Thomas was born on June 9, 1892 in Butler County, Kentucky, the son of William K Thomas (1858–1921) and his 1st wife Laura (Bray) Thomas (1863–1898). {William was married 2nd to Nona Mae Cross (1872–1939).}

He enlisted in the US Army on May 26, 1918 and was discharged on February 26, 1919, having served during World War I.

Amos was married 1st to Erma Inez Barbee (1902–1939), and she was the daughter of George "Forrest" Barbee (1865-1938) and Onie Velma (Fletcher) Barbee (1886-1977). He was married 2nd as the 2nd husband of Lillian (Hastings) Leach (1913–22 Nov 1969), the daughter of Luther Wesley Hastings (1877–1964) and Susan Theodosia (Gardner) Hastings (1879–1961).

A retired painter living at 511 Crossland Avenue in Clarksville and a member of Cumberland Drive Baptist Church, Amos was 81 years old and a widower when he died at General Care Convalescent Center on October 12, 1973 following an extended illness.

Preceded in death by his wife Lillian, his only known sister Goldy Thomas, brothers Goller(?) Thomas, Hubert Thomas, Wilbur Thornton Thomas and by his half-brother Floyd Thomas. Survivors included sons Allen Thomas of Clarksville and Roger D Thomas in Winnie, Texas, daughter Mrs Frances Kelly of Clarksville, brothers Jesse Thomas of Auburn, Kentucky and Chester Thomas in Clarksville, half-brothers Alfred Thomas of Hopkinsville, Kentucky and Leslie Thomas of Clarksville, thirteen grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral Services were held on October 15th at Cumberland Drive Baptist Church, and burial was in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Clarksville, with nephews as Pallbearers and McReynolds Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
