Bertha Irene (Wright) Bentley (1896-1942)

Brother:
Charles Norman Bentley (1921-1974)

He was born in Alton, Madison County, Illinois on November 15, 1923, the second son of his parents.

His mother died when he was in high school.

His father was a professional photographer for the Illinois Glass Company in Alton, IL. During the early years before the US joined WWII, their factory switched to making glass parts for war vehicles and planes, so he worked in the factory during his high school years. Shorty after his mother died, the Illinois Glass Company merged with Toledo-based Libbey Glass, and his dad was transferred to Toledo, Ohio.

Gordon remained in the family home to fulfill the war contracts for a few months after high school, then moved to Toledo in 1943. He then enlisted in the US Navy, training in Chicago, IL and Kalamazoo, MI. Once discharged, he studied at the University of Toledo, and eventually held a lucrative career in the Forest Products division of the merged glass company, Owens-Illinois, retiring in 1983. He was one of the first pioneers working with the earliest computers as a systems analyst, receiving accolades for his innovative methods .

He married his first wife, Eloise Neda Chantoff, on December 29, 1950 at her home at 1724 Mount Vernon. They had three children and later divorced after fifteen years of marriage.

His children:
Anne Kathryn (Bentley) Begg, born November 12, 1952
Alice Irene (Bentley) Lemle, born April 13, 1955
Charles Gordon Bentley, born November 29, 1956

His second wife was Darlene Mae Coger Vendt, and they married on December 1, 1967 at Monroe Street Methodist Church. They were married for 45 years until she died.

Once his wife Darlene retired from Owens-Illinois, they moved to Saint Petersburg, FL, where they lived at Isla del Sol, Casa del Mar, for over thirty happy years.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles Norman Bentley (1921-1974), and by his wife, Darlene, who died seven months before him.
