Farmer Killed When Tractor, Disk Overturn

Roy Alstat, a 59 year old Vergennes farmer, was killed Sunday afternoon when he was thrown from his tractor and pinned beneath the wreckage of the tractor and the disk it was pulling, Jackson County sheriff's deputies said.

Alstat was apparently crossing a small concrete bridge, known as Little Rattlesnake Creek Bridge, on County Mudline Road about one half mile north of Illinois 4 when the accident occurred.

The disk apparently hit the bridge guardrail and caused the tractor to go out of control and plunge sideways over the rail, deputies said.

A neighbor who lives across the field from the accident site found Alstat pinned beneath the wreckage in the creek bed. The neighbor and Alstat's cousin, Wayne, who also lives nearby, pulled the machinery off Alstat, after calling authorities. Alstat apparently died before he was discovered, deputies said.

Another neighbor had seen Alstat driving his tractor in the vicinity of the accident site about 5 p.m., so deputies theorize the accident must have occurred about 5:10 p.m., and Alstat must have been killed instantly. There were no witnesses to the accident.
