Obituary - Algoma Paper - Friday 26 Jan 1940 Kewaunee; Gustave Maigatter, 85, a resident of Kewaunee since 1871 died Tuesday (23 Jan) afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emil Suchosky, from the effects of a stroke suffered Jan. 6. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late home with the Rev. W.A. Kuether officiating. Burial will be in the Kewaunee Public cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons; Albert, William, and Richard Strew, and Eugene, Raymond, and Charles Maigatter, jr. A native of Magdeburg, Prussia, where he was born Nov. 15, 1854, Mr. Maigatter came to the U.S. as a boy, arriving in Milwaukee Oct. 10, 1866, after a voyage across the ocean which took 49 days. He attended school at Milwaukee and as a young man went to Waterford to work on a farm. In 1871 with his family he moved to Kewaynee, first being employed at the sawmill located on "the point", and later with the W. Seyk company. Later he worked his fathers farm and served on the city council 6 years. He was a member of Kewaunee's original Hook and Ladder company. He married Miss Caroline Heider, Feb. 11, 1879. Surviving are his wife, 4 children; Charles, Two Rivers, William on home farm, Mrs. Alvina Strew, Mrs Emil Suchoski, Kewaunee. A sister; Mrs. H.A. Esche, Milwaukee, 23 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren, Four children preceded him in death.
