Reginald L. Burns, Sr., 70, of Union, died Jan. 28 surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 28, 1934 in Rockland, he was the son of the late Lennie and Marion Burns.

After attending school in Union, Reggie held various jobs, ranging from truck driving to blueberry harvesting. He was well liked by his employers and fellow employees. Upon retirement, he became known as "The Tire Man on the Hill". He was well-known for his potato gardens, taking great pleasure in giving away his harvest to family friends, local food banks, and even shipping boxes of potatoes to his granddaughter in Boston. Reggie could often be found at Mic Mac Market drinking coffee, catching up on the local news and good heartedly teasing the employees. Reggie worked hard raising his family with his wife Armajean, and worked harder at enjoying his grandchildren. He was always there to chauffeur them around to school, sporting events and to work, happily grumbling along the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Keith Burns of Union.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly 50 years, Armajean (Belcher); five children, Reginald Burns, Jr. and his wife Kristi of Washington, George Burns of Hartford, Vt., Lennie Burns and his wife Laura of Jefferson, Darlene Hammond and her husband Dana of Somerville, and Marion Whitehouse and her husband John of Union; five grandchildren, Courtney Burns of Boston, Mass., Jared Burns of Washington, Erick Hammond of Somerville, and Alexandra and Maxwell Niles of Union; his brother, Chester Burns of Randolph; two sisters, Arlene Ross of Union and Arabelle Duvall of Rochester, Mass.; and many nephews, nieces and cousins remain in the area.

Family and friends are invited to attend and share memories at a service, 3 p.m., Wed., Feb. 2 at the Farrar-Ross VFW Post #9437, 292 Razorville Rd. (intersection of Route 105 and the Vannah Road) in Washington. Following the service will be a time of visitation.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation & Funeral Service, Waldoboro.

Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Reggie's memory to the American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086, and blood donations to the American Red Cross.

Private spring interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Union.
